The Citizens Commission for the Hoover Report was a bipartisan group of Americans that sponsored the "Cracker Barrel Caravan," which traveled the United States informing the public of the reorganization program and other recommendations to improve government efficiency that were the outcome of the work done by the Commission on Organization of the Executive Branch of the Government (known as the Hoover Commission). Appointed by President Truman in 1947, the Commission was meant to review and recommend changes to operations in the federal government. Description: Thomas Corwin (1794-1865) was born in Kentucky and was a life long politician. He served as the fifteenth governor of Ohio from 1840 to 1842. After his time as governor he served as a US Senator, and in this capacity he was known as a great orator, eloquently expressing his opposition to the Mexican War. Description: Henry Clay was born on April 12, 1777, in Hanover County, Virginia. By the age of twenty, Clay had established a law practice in Lexington, Kentucky. He served in the US House of Representatives and Senate throughout his life and even as the Speaker. Clay proposed the Missouri Compromise in 1820. While many Ohioans opposed Clay's compromise, Clay remained popular within the state. His political career is full of attempts to foster compromise with the North and South. Description: A Zanesville, Ohio, native, Samuel S. Cox (1824-1889) was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1857 to 1865. In 1853, Cox embarked upon a newspaper career, serving as the editor of the 'Ohio Statesman' in Columbus. Cox was an active member of the Democratic Party, and used his newspaper to further that party's influence in the state. Description: Charles Foster (1828-1904) was governor of Ohio from 1880 to 1884. Foster chose to run as the Republican candidate for Ohio governor in 1879, and campaigned on the issue of sound money, which would require the government to back paper money with gold. Foster won the election and focused his administration on reforming the state government so that it was more efficient. In addition, Foster supported the temperance movement by favoring higher liquor taxes. Ultimately, his support of this tax, known as the Pond Law, contributed to his defeat in the election of 1883. He later went on to serve as Secretary of the Treasury under President Benjamin Harrison from 1891 through 1893. View on Ohio Memory.
